DNA is not only the basic medium for storing genomic information, but can also be used to store binary data. Within the Fraunhofer-funded project BIOSYNTH, four Fraunhofer institutes are pooling their know-how to develop a novel microchip platform for efficient cell-free and digitally controllable biosynthesis as the basis for mass data storage of the future with extremely high storage density.

The aim is to achieve a significant improvement in DNA synthesis through a universal microchip platform for DNA / RNA / peptide writing. For this purpose, a platform for writing software-defined nucleotide sequences will be developed. Therein, miniaturized reaction cells are integrated into a freely-programmable active matrix array arrangement. By duplicating the volume processes of the microelectronics industry, the highly parallel and high-throughput production of mass storage media is enabled.

BIOSYNTH: four Fraunhofer institutes are pooling their know-how

Fraunhofer FEP designs the integrated circuit of the CMOS backplane for driving and readout. Fraunhofer IPMS is developing the "thermal" layer for the microchip platform and contributing simulation expertise for thermal functionality. The goal is then to realize a MEMS technology in which organic components (organic light-emitting diodes and photodiodes) from Fraunhofer FEP can be integrated to monitor the synthesis process. Fraunhofer IZI-BB then realizes the synthesis process using the microchip platform. Fraunhofer ITEM is working on the corresponding coding processes in biological components.
