ENEA

ENEA is the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development, a “public organization established to undertake research and technological innovation, and to provide cutting-edge services to business, government and the public in the areas of energy, the environment and sustainable economic development” (Italian Law n. 221/2015).

ENEA workforce is about 2200 employees (Nov. 2025), leading research and innovation about nuclear fusion, nuclear safety technologies, energy, sustainability and circular economy, and environment. ENEA develops technological innovations for products and processes for a more sustainable manufacturing, and promotes the development of the production systems through the cooperation between research and companies, and between research and innovation networks, such as districts, clusters and industrial consortia.

ENEA activities are carried out in 14 research centers and laboratories distributed in Italy. They house outstanding infrastructures, experimental equipment and excellent competences for applications in traditional manufacturing as well as in new sectors such as strategic and critical raw materials, smart factories, smart cities, eco-industry and eco-design. Four thematic Departments manage and perform the different technical activities: Energy Technologies (TERIN), Fusion and Nuclear Safety Technologies (NUC), Sustainability (SSPT), and Energy Efficiency (DUEE).

Laboratory SSPT-TIMAS-CMS

Laboratory for Smart Components and Systems (SSPT-TIMAS-CMS) is part of the Division for Technologies and Materials for Sustainable Manufacturing (SSPT-TIMAS) within the Department for Sustainability (SSPT). It is located in three ENEA Research Centres: Portici (near Napoli), Brindisi and Casaccia (near Roma).

Lab. CMS studies, develops, and prepares materials, fabrication processes, and components and systems, even based upon materials that have autonomous functions and upon integration of electronic and optoelectronic devices and sensors and actuators. Activities aim to reduce the consumptions (of energy, of materials, of water, of processing time) along the entire lifetime of the final components, to substitute the traditional raw materials with ones having a smaller environmental impact and/or with secondary raw materials, and to reuse/recycle the materials and the components at their end-of-life.

Studies focus on using polymers and molecular organics; applied process techniques include depositions of materials from solution, digital printing, additive manufacturing from pastes and filaments, and some vacuum processes. Main target is to fabricate high added-value laboratory-scale prototypes and demonstrators for manufacturing industries in several sectors: transportation, aerospace, electronics, lighting, packaging, logistics, biomedical, Made in Italy, etc.
