At the Dortmund site, Boehringer Ingelheim microParts GmbH manufactures the RESPIMAT® product portfolio and supports it throughout its life cycle. The RESPIMAT® is a propellant-free pocket inhaler. Up to 45 million inhalation devices are produced annually at the Dortmund site. In total, the site has around 630 employees.
Thanks to the experience gained from the development and manufacture of the RESPIMAT® device, the site has been the Device Center Operations in the group of companies since 2022. In this role, Dortmund is responsible for new medical products such as syringe systems on their way to patients.
In 2004, Boehringer Ingelheim acquired Steag microParts in Dortmund, which has since operated under the name Boehringer Ingelheim microParts GmbH. Series production of the RESPIMAT® began as early as 2002. In Boehringer Ingelheim's global production network, the Dortmund site is responsible for the production of the RESPIMAT® inhaler, which is then packaged together with the active ingredient cartridges in Ingelheim and Sant Cugat, Spain. In Dortmund, the technology platform around the RESPIMAT® is also being continuously developed. Since 2019, the RESPIMAT® has also been available in a reusable version.
