At the eighth LaserForum IVAM has gathered around 50 experts from the field of laser and optics to discuss “Laser-based Innovations in Manufacturing of Electronic Components and Moduls”. The forum was hosted by Coherent LaserSystems from Göttingen. Amongst the presenters were representatives from the industry as well as from renowned research institutes. The presentations made clear that the application possibilities for laser technology in the electronic industry are manifold.

Current trends like Excimer lasers, solid-state lasers and ultrashort pulse lasers were examined. Further domains were packaging of electronic components, photovoltaics, displays made of glass as well as OLEDs. Especially because of the individualization of products, more and more machining operations are needed which make custom-made items possible. In this field photo lithography based on masks has been the customary form of production, but as it came up against technical, limiting factors, laser technology is now an attractive alternative for the manufacturing industry.
